Built in 1954 thru 1955, the Cedar Hills Shopping Center continues to be a traditional landmark where Hwy 217 and Hwy 26 meet in the northern end of Beaverton 10 minutes west of Portland, Oregon. The first store to open in the center was Safeway, on August 22, 1954. The shopping center also featured a Rodgers variety store, Sunset Hardware and Appliance, Sears and Roebuck, The Patio restaurant and coffee shop, Cedar Hills Shoe Store, Cent Wise Drug Store, Wilma's Gift and Flower Shop, Edward Allen's barber shop, Dore Photography, Linda's Beauty Shop, Bucher Realty, First National Bank of Portland, Parker Furniture, Kiddy Ville, Maxine's Safari, Patty's Pin Cushion, City Finance, Rawlinson's Cleaners, Kirby's Hobbies, Leo's Shoe Repair, Frank and Helen's TV Service, Clay's Apparel, Dental Office, Ruth's Bakery and Morley's Union service station.
The DMV now resides where the Safeway store was. The Safeway opened on August 22, 1954 and left in 1997. A Harbor Freight tool store is located next to the DMV. The Union 76 gas station has long been closed.
Pictured below is an aerial photo from 1949. The new road (double tracked) under construction is the future Sunset Highway. The large clearing to the left will soon be the new home of the Cedar Hills Shopping center. The diagonal road going thru Hwy 26 is Barnes Road. You can see the clover leaf beginning to take shape. The clover leaf ramp configuration was a classic style of freeway construction in the 1950's.
